Solarnet-S3 “Sun in Science and Society”

It has successfully concluded the Solarnet-S3 “Sun in Science and Society” congress, which took place from September 10th to 15th at M9-Museo del ‘900 in Venice/Mestre. The meeting has been organized in the framework of the SOLARNET project in view of the realization of the European Solar Telescope (EST), which will be the largest solar telescope in Europe and the second-largest in the whole world. The objective of the congress has been to create and tighten the links between solar physicists, engineers, stakeholders and economists from around the world. During the conference, several aspects of solar physics have been discussed, in particular, highlighting the impact that solar activity-related phenomena may have on our technological society. The presence of experts from different communities made it possible to describe the contribution that the study of the Sun can give in different fields, including Earth’s climate, space weather and space climate, extrasolar planets, as well as how the Sun constitutes a Rosetta stone in the understanding of a large number of physical processes.
The Solar and Space Physics group of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, which was strongly involved in the organization of the congress, made a large contribution to the scientific discussion by means of several talks and posters.
